The Wayback Machine: an Important Tool for the CFE

Description: An important tool for almost any fraud investigation needing historical data is the Wayback Machine, a free digital archive of the world’s websites.  It contains “snapshots” of ~778 billion websites from past postings on the internet…with emphasis on the word “past.”  The archives include websites that have been deleted with the oldest item being from 1996.  You can time-travel to find a specific website from years ago. There are many uses such as:  finding current & former company employees & vendors; finding current & former company owners & board members; putting faces to names; finding company news such as product launches; and watching past company videos.  Other topics will include "hunchly" & other ways to capture & document data.  Note that a federal appeals court has stipulated that archived webpages may be used as evidence in litigation.  Join us to learn how to use the Wayback Machine or how to hone your skills using it for making important discoveries.

Speaker: Scott Fulmer, principal, Resolutis Investigations, has more than 30 years of experience as a private investigator licensed in Texas.  Based in San Antonio, his firm provides services to the insurance & legal communities as well as to private individuals. He utilizes operatives throughout the U.S. and many foreign countries.  Fulmer earned his bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice from the University of Texas at San Antonio and is a former state investigator.  He is the author of the true crime memoir, Confessions of a Private Eye.  Also, he is a disabled veteran of the Gulf War and a fifth-generation Texan.  Fulmer holds memberships in prestigious industry groups, including: NCISS, Intellinet, and World Association of Detectives.
