2025 Spring Seminar - REGISTER NOW

REGISTRATION is OPEN with a "hybrid" format so that you may attend in-person or virtually.  In-person location is St. Edward's University, 3001 S. Congress in John Brooks-Williams (JBW) Science Bldg. "South", room 165; a different building from previous seminars at St. Ed's.

Refer to Registration Confirmation (sent via email) for parking requirements, including a required "code" and URL link. NO cost, but you must pre-register your vehicle to avoid a ticket. 

Description:   Multiple sessions for a total of 6 CPE hours at a low cost of only $120 per Austin ACFE member (& $140 per non-member) plus lunch is provided for in-person participants.  Share this information with a colleague or client so they can attend, too!  Sessions will cover topics shown below.

~8:30-9:00am  Welcome & Announcements (with Coffee & Networking)

~9:00-9:50am "From Classroom to Courtroom" by Sarah Manion, MSDAIS, TXST - This session is about student innovation in audio and text evidence analytics with descriptions of how the students uncover hidden patterns, coded language, and intentionally misleading phrasing in criminal communications. Their system goes far beyond the traditional use of simple keywords. 

~10:00-10:50am "Update:  AICPA Task Force on AI & Forensics" by Chandu Chilakapati, partner and Global Head of Valuation and Investigations at Aprio -  Learn about recent and planned activities of this special task force in the areas of Artificial Intelligence and Forensics.

~11:00-11:50am  "Art & Science of Investigating Healthcare Fraud" by Jala Attia, CFE, AHFI, CHC  The focus of this session is the dual nature of healthcare fraud investigations, requiring rigorous data-driven techniques with nuanced judgment and creativity to detect and prevent fraud, waste, and abuse in the healthcare sector.

~Noon-1:30pm  Business Meeting & Lunch (provided for in-person participants)

~1:30-4:30pm "Red Collar Crime" by Frank Perri, JD, CPA, CFE  Explore the intersection between fraud and violence and how fraud detection can trigger violent responses from fraud offenders.  The speaker coined the term "Red Collar Crime" and has given presentations and written extensively on this topic.  His most recent article, "Knowing the Red Flags of Red-Collar Fraudsters Could Save Your Life" was published May 1 in Fraud Magazine:  www.acfe.com/fraud-magazine/all-issues/issue/article?s=2025-mayjune-fraud-edge-red-collar-crime

Learning Objectives - [Detailed descriptions of LOs are in the PD file linked at the top of this page].  After attending these sessions, participants will be able to:

  • Explain the importance of applied learning activities of students interfacing with law enforcement;

  • Describe work of the AICPA Task Force on AI and Forensics;

  • Explain and utilize special techniques for fraud examination in the healthcare sector, including analytics, judgment, and creativity.

  • Identify and explain multiple aspects of the "red flags" and reasons why white collar criminals can become violent and potentially lethal.

Recommended CPE credit & Field of Study:  6 total CPE hours & field of Specialized Knowledge

Refund, Cancellation & No-Show Policy: Refunds of fees paid for internet-based sessions may be provided only if registrant contacts Austin ACFE within 24 hours of the start time of the session & documents an emergency or similar event that prevented participation. For in-person events, registration cancellations and refund request must be made by contacting Austin ACFE within 5 calendar days from the start time of the session.  Cancellations received less than 5 days prior to events will not be refunded except for exigent circumstances.  Contact must be made via email to: info@austinacfe.com

In the event a registrant does not show up to an event, the registration cost will be forfeited. If payment at the door was the selected method, the registrant will be billed for the full cost of the event. The Austin ACFE reserves the right to bar from future events registrants who routinely register and fail to pay and/or attend the event.


For events provided by the Austin chapter at no cost to registrants, there will be no refunds.


Complaint Resolution Policy:  Any concerns or complaints about registration for an event must be made within 14 calendar days of the event (with the event date counting as day 1) in writing to:  info@austinacfe.com  


NASBA Registry: The Austin Area chapter of the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners is registered with the National Association of State Boards of Accountancy (NASBA) as a sponsor of continuing professional education on the National Registry of CPE Sponsors. State boards of accountancy have final authority on the acceptance of individual courses for CPE credit. Complaints regarding registered sponsors may be submitted to the National Registry of CPE Sponsors through its website: www.nasbaregistry.org
